Well, I finally did it. Commencement was held this morning, and it was so great to finally have that degree in my hands. All the late nights, the weekend study sessions, the last-minute cramming, and the blood, sweat, and tears were all forgotten once I went up there to take what was rightfully mine. It was all worth it, though. Now I have a few years of teaching to look forward to, until I go back to school to get my Masters. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. For now, I just want to bask in this feeling of awesomeness!! This piece of paper is the most expensive thing I currently own. I’ll be paying it off for years to come!

They neglected to make the change to my surname, though. It still has my maiden name on there, even though I asked them to add my husband’s last name to the degree. Either they didn’t get the request, or it didn’t get approved in time. Oh well; what matters most is that it’s all mine and I earned it dammit!
The only thing that could have made this day perfect would have been the presence of my husband. Listening to the president’s commencement speech, it was hard holding back the tears as she talked about how our loved ones should be thanked for helping us get through it all. I thought of my husband, who was always there for me through thick and thin. I know it was hard on him when I would cancel plans to work on a project, the days I would ask him not to bother me so I could study for an midterm, or the summer I had to stay home most nights just to keep up with the daily homework assignments. Oh, and the trip I missed because I had a final exam that I needed to take. It was hard on our relationship, but we got through it. He was strong for me, even though I knew it was hard for him to be my rock at times. But he never faltered, and he never tried to keep me from achieving my goal. I only wish he could have been there to see me finally get that degree.
It was still a wonderful day. And I’m proud to say that I graduated from university. Not many of the people that graduated in my high school class can say the same thing.
