There is a girl in my physical science class who is deaf. She has a sign language translator go in with her and it’s fascinating to watch the lady sign the entire lecture for her. I see her talk animatedly with the translator whenever we have a break, and it just makes me wonder what they’re talking about. I’ve always had an interest in learning sign language, but I have never really gotten the chance to try and learn it. A co-worker of mine is also deaf. He works as a bagger for our grocery store. We seriously believe in being an equal opportunity employer. Every time I work with him, I wish I could communicate with him other things besides asking for a carryout or to return an item. I feel so incompetent whenever he signs something to me and I don’t understand what he’s trying to say. It took almost five minutes for me to be able to understand him when he was trying to congratulate me on getting engaged. I guess now I have no urgency to learn sign language anymore, seeing as how I will be transferring from that store soon. Still, I would have liked to converse with him and tell him what a great worker I think he is. All I’ve been able to do is give him a thumbs up and smile when I think he has done something good. Not all of our baggers work as hard as he does, and it’s kind of sad. I still have about two weeks working at that store, though. I’m going to try my best and learn some sign language so I can tell him that I think he’s an excellent worker and that I will miss him. One day though, I will be able to hand sign. I will also be able to speak and understand Japanese. Then I won’t feel so intimidated when I go and get my nails done. Seriously, you just know they’re talking about you and how dry your cuticles are. Very busy day, according to my usual lazy standards anyway. I got up early this morning and cleaned my car, inside and out. It was something I had avoided due to the accident, but it was getting quite dirty. Especially the inside. It somehow became my personal trash can and so there was a lot of junk in the backseat. Rob and I went to PetSmart to buy the puppies their first leashes. They’re big enough for them now, although I think they like being carried around like little babies. We put them on the ground with their new leashes, but they just froze. It’s like they knew they were no longer free to run amok. I want to take them to the park one day. They love the backyard, so I know they’ll have a good time at the park. I was at work today, and I happened to look up to see this little girl, about four years old, jamming out to an iPod mini. I’m dead tired. I just finished getting out of work, and I have to go in at six in the morning tomorrow. |
